Good reads: The Imperfectionists + others

Anyone who knows me knows that I love to read. So I thought I'd start sharing some of my good reads here! I hope to turn this into a regular feature, which would be a great motivation to write about the books I read, as a way to remember them perhaps, and in a way, pay tribute. For I am passionate about a good story. Here are a few good reads I had the pleasure of reading recently.

The Imperfectionists: a compilation of stories, the novel revolves around a team of seemingly ordinary expats who work for a declining English newspaper based in Rome. This book reminded me why I love short stories: short stories are like photographs; just a snippet of the people in them, yet they tell a story, but there's also room for imagination.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, and think anyone who loves the printed medium should give it a try.

Cutting for Stone: where do I even start? This book was a recommendation from my friend Nat {who, not surprisingly also recommended The Imperfectionists!}. In turn, it was recommended to her by a friend, who had said to her, "If I only ever make one reading recommendation to you, this would be it". So I picked it up one day (very convenient since I already owned a copy of it), and just started to read. The book is storytelling at its finest, and the writing is simply lyrical. It read like a song, every word, every sentence was effortless. Like they were meant to be there. I was completely captivated. And the author? He's also a doctor! *Sigh* how can one human being have so much talent?! It's almost unfair. The book is an epic story about twin brothers abandoned at birth, who grew up in Ethiopia at the dawn of the revolution. It's a story about love, and about family. Like all good stories. :)

The Elegance of the Hedgehog: I read this as part of a book club pick and loved it. It's very intelligent and explores some philosophical thoughts through the intertwining story of Renee, who is a middle-aged concierge in an elite Parisian building, and Paloma, who is a very intelligent 12-year old living in the building. Unbeknownst to each other, both are hiding their true selves from a world they deem to be dangerous to be anything other than ordinary. It's a heartwarming read, and thought provoking.

The Hunger Games: YUP I finally gave in to the hype! But boy was it worth it. This is not your typical teen series. Repeat after me: this is not your typical teen series. Why? For one thing, the point of the story is not on the importance of having a boyfriend. Suzanne Collins writes with simplicity but tells a superb story. She weaves a tale of dystopian society where the theme of war is ever present. I think it's a refreshing take, perhaps because it's told from the point of view of a 17 year old girl, on the effects of war. Be warned: the world of The Hunger Games just draws you in, you really cannot put them down once you start! I read the series in a week. M told me he'd never seen me so enamoured by a book before, not even Harry Potter.

Happy New Year

As I'm typing this, I can't help but feel that the end of this year has kind of snuck up on me. A lot has happened in 2011, filled with big moments and small moments.

It's been an amazing year and as I reflect back on the year past, there is a lot that I am thankful for. A big thank you to my clients for inviting me to share a little piece of their world and trusting me to document that world; to Melissa from Moments by Melissa Miller for allowing me the opportunity to second shoot alongside her this year; to my dear friends and family, for their support, patience and love; and last but not least to my hubby-to-be, thank you for being who you are, for loving me as I am, believing in me before I believed in myself, and supporting my dreams.

For 2012, I strive to keep my mind and my heart open; to be positive and hopeful; to see the opportunity in every challenge; and to continue to learn and grow.

Happy New Year! Wishing you a very happy and wonderful 2012, filled with love, laughter and the sweetest moments.

A few things to consider when choosing a wedding photographer

One of the first questions friends and family asked me when I told them of our engagement was: so who will photograph your wedding? My answer? Ha-ha. If I could do it myself, I just might. Just kidding! I mean I wouldn’t do it myself because I’d be afraid to let someone else do the job, I’d do it because I really would want to.

As a bride to-be myself, there were a few things that stood out to me as my fiancĂ© and I looked for a photographer for our wedding day. Or shall I say as I looked for a photographer? Let’s be honest, for the most part, it’s the bride who does the research on the wedding photographer. Occasionally the groom would be very involved as well, which is awesome, but that’s rare. Unfortunately, I feel the reason most men aren’t into wedding photography is because they associate us photographers with them being asked to smile awkwardly and strike cheesy and awkward poses. But that’s another topic altogether.

Back to the wedding photographer search then. Many of the clients I’ve met with or spoken with usually tell me they don’t know anything about the industry or anything about professional photography. As a photographer myself, I was very lucky in that I’ve seen tons of amazing work long before I got engaged. 3 years ago when I discovered the online blogging community, it opened up a world to which I didn’t really know existed. With the internet, we can now instantly connect to resources, content, ideas etc generated by someone who is thousands of miles away. It was awesome to see so many creative people out there doing amazing things. This led me to discover wedding inspiration blogs such as Snippet and Ink, Once Wed, Style Me Pretty etc and through them, I discovered a lot of really good photographers. It was overwhelming, well, it still is. There are so many talented photographers out there, at all sorts of price ranges; anywhere from $2,500 to $10,000 and up. How would one choose the right photographer? As I became familiar with the industry (at least in the United States, it’s a little different here in Canada), I had a few inklings about how I would choose a wedding photographer when we get engaged, and below are my ideas.

These are just my opinions of course, so it’s not that they are the golden criteria for selecting your photographer, but if these might be of some help to someone, then that’s awesome.

1. Make sure you really like their photos and their approach and style of photography, and that their work speaks to you. There were many times when I fell in love with someone’s work after just a few photos but then discovered that perhaps I’m not so in love after all. The opposite was true where I might not have liked a few initial photos but then ended up really liking their work. What drove this flip-flop of opinion? The answer was the photographer’s blog. Most photographers blog about their work, and by going through post after post, you really get a sense of what their approach and style is, which you might not always be able to put into words, but you’ll have an impression in your mind. So go through as many posts as you can, it will give you a good sense of how the images tell the story of each wedding. Choosing a photographer whose work speaks to you, to me it’s so essential it’s almost common sense, but why is that important? Getting married to the love of your life is probably one of the most important things you’ll do in your life, it’s a big deal no? Therefore, you would want photographs that speak to you, that tug at your heartstrings, that bring a tear to your eyes perhaps, and that will make you re-live those moments every time you look at them. That, is why we say a picture is worth more than a thousand words. (Really if I could take a picture to show you the essentials of this blog post, I would!)

2. Make sure that the photographer is a good fit for you and your sweetie. This means that not only do you like their photographs, you like them. How do you find out? One of the first hints is through their blog and their website, you get to know them a little. It’s hard to blog about your work and not show bits and pieces of who you are as well, not just as a photographer but as a person. Embrace this opportunity before you even meet them! Find out what their interests are, what they love and what ticks them off etc. Then when you do meet them, even if it’s via Skype, you have another chance to get to know them more. Once you get a better feel of what this person is about beyond the fact that he/she is a wedding photographer, you will either like them or not like them. Which is good, in the sense that it’s better to find out now than on your wedding day. I’m not saying your wedding photographer is interviewing for the position of your best friend, but rather you might want someone who you feel comfortable with, can get along with, and have that sense of rapport with.

3. Make sure the photographer is invested in you. Now how would you know if your photographer would be invested in you? I believe it’s in the details. Do they respond to emails/phone calls promptly? Do they take the time to answer your questions thoroughly and thoughtfully even before you’d booked them? Are they open with you in terms of communications? As a photographer, do they have your best interest in mind?

4. Price. I firmly believe that good things don’t necessarily have to cost a lot more, because not everyone has an unlimited budget. So once you find a few photographers who fit the above 3 criteria well, it comes down to getting the best quality you can afford. Are you getting the best price or the best value?

I hope this helps, and if you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them! I think the above also apply to choosing a photographer for other things, such as family and lifestyle photographer.

Captured Words

Some bridge graffiti quite randomly appeared on a pedestrian cross bridge by the train station a couple of weeks ago. I'm not usually a big fan of graffiti but this one strikes a cord with me.

Once upon a time...

"Once upon a time there was a boy who loved a girl, and her laughter was a question he wanted to spend his whole life answering. " - The History of Love, by Nicole Krauss.

These two love birds' expressions in this photo reminds me of this quote.

Wedding Photography Workshop with Tara McMullen Part 2

Attending the Wedding & Event Photography Workshop with Tara McMullen and Pikto studio is probably one of the best things I've done since I decided to start my own business. Tara is a talented and awesome photographer based in Toronto. Over the 2 days, she shared with us tips for breaking into the industry, photographic techniques, tips for running your own business and valuable resources. Tara even shared with us a couple of her secret shooting locations! ;)

For day 2, we had the pleasure of photographing the lovely and stunning Sabrina, and her handsome and ever-so-patient husband, Michael. Thanks guys!

Wedding Photography Workshop with Tara McMullen Part 1

Yesterday I attended part 1 of a 2-day workshop on wedding photography with the amazing Toronto-based photographer Tara McMullen, offered in conjunction with Pikto Studio in the historic Distillery District.

I learned a lot of tips and tricks from Tara, not just on photography, but on the business side of wedding photography as well. Tara is so helpful, nice and has a great sense of humour. What's even more, she is so open to sharing her experience, her knowledge and her resources. I feel like I have came away with so much after just 2 days. Thank you Tara!

For day 1, we had the pleasure of photographing the lovely Dani and Bianca. Check out some photos below!

Dream a Little Dream of Me

I came across a video of the song on Youtube today by Zooey Deschanel (of 500 Days of Summer fame)

I immediately started humming along and realized I had heard the French version of the song many times before in the movie French Kiss. For some reason I always assumed that it is a French song. It just sounds very French to me :) I love it. I also love the movie.

Sunsets

Dusk and dawn are my favourite times of the day. Perhaps befittingly as these hours are referred to as "the golden hours" by photographers, mainly because the light is soft and warm. I love sunsets, they are different everyday and the colours are almost always dramatic.

a certain something

METRO Photo Challenge: charmed

I submitted a few photos to the Metro Photo Challenge 2010 today, this being one of them.

I struggled for a long time with naming the photo and finally settled on "charmed". But just after I submitted it, a certain well known French phrase came to mind: je ne sais quoi. Often used to describe the effortlessly elegant French women. For me, this is the perfect phrase to describe Carey Mulligan, the actress in the picture.
